Lesson 1 – Basic World Geography

Procedure:

Since this is the first day of class, this can be combined with teaching  greetings and introductions (“Where are you from? I’m from …,” etc.) and getting to know one another.  Students can come up to the map, show their countries as they say where they are from. The teacher can reinforce vocabulary above, introducing river, ocean, etc., using names and places the students are familiar with. Lists of students’ countries, rivers, oceans, etc., can be written on the board. If students seem ready, the teacher can introduce the US map and briefly name and label a few states whose names students volunteer, oceans that border the US, locations of Canada and Mexico. If time allows, students can form groups of 2-3 to have some of these conversations.
